A thyristor-switched capacitor (TSC) is a type of equipment used for compensating reactive power in electrical power systems. It consists of a power capacitor connected in series with a bidirectional thyristor valve and, usually, a current limiting reactor (inductor).
Thyristor switched capacitor banks (TSC) can be applied for compensating the fast changing characteristics of electric welding machines, provide a maximum response of one-cycle of system frequency [ 27 - 29 ].
LTSM – Thyristor Power Switch Module for Capacitor Bank. Libratherm offers Thyristor Switch Module, specially designed for Real time Power Factor Correction (RTPFC) applications. RTPFC is designed to compensate the reactive power on real time basis for extremely rapid acquisition of the power factor within the range of 100 – 120 millisecond.
Thyristors being solid state switch, offers many advantages compared to electromechanical contactors. Libratherm make LTSM modules are available to switch single or 3 phase capacitor banks rated for 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 75, 100 & 150 KVAR.
Hence, this study focused on designing and applying a thyristor switched capacitor (TSC) bank for voltage flicker improvement. However, the single-phase TSC should also satisfy the reactive power demand and compensation speed, considering proper ratings of TSC to bear high harmonic distortion.
When the thyristor switch receives an external conducting control signal from the power factor controller, the zero-cross triggering technology of the control circuit module will switch on the capacitor without excessive inrush current and switch off at the instant when the current is reduced to zero.
