Bob Pease wrote an article2 in which he tested several types of capacitors for leakage. As expected, Teflon and various Poly capacitors topped the list of lowest absorption, and tantalum, mica and ceramic had the highest. Nodes should be grounded or kept at minimal potentials when idle to minimize dielectric absorption.
Solid aluminum electrolyte capacitors have a solid electrolyte material — such as manganese dioxide or conductive polymer — for the cathode. They offer low ESR, low leakage current, low dissipation factor, and long life. However, they also have lower capacitance, lower voltage rating, and higher cost than liquid electrolyte capacitors.
The leakage current of any tantalum capacitor is many times greater than it is for a ceramic capacitor of equal value and may render them unsuitable for extremely low current applications. For example, a 1 μF/25 V tantalum capacitor has a maximum leakage current of 2.5 μA at rated voltage while operating at 85°C.
