Restrike - Is defined as the re-ignition of load current following current interruption within a vacuum switch.
The arc develops rapidly during fracture, and it is prone to restrike. Meanwhile, rough statistics were performed on the duration of restrike. As the current-limiting resistance value decreases, the duration of restrike is also extended, which is unfavourable for the working conditions of vacuum circuit breaker.
The restrike characteristics under different operating conditions reflect different defects inside vacuum circuit breaker . According to data from Shaoxing Test Station, the current restrike rate of 12 kV vacuum circuit breaker is about 2% to 4%, which can be reduced to less than 1% after practice.
The restrike process of the vacuum circuit breaker includes the development, formation, maintenance, and dissipation of the electron beam, and it is subject to factors such as contact spacing, loop current, and closing inrush current before breaking.
Arrester energy during a capacitor switch restrike event is dependent on the capacitor configuration, ratings, source strength (including nearby capacitors and number of transmission lines), and arrester protective level (e.g., maximum switching surge protective level – MSSPL).
