What is a phase shift?

It is a relative quantity, and thus it must be given as a difference in phase between two points. In this article, "phase shift" will refer to the difference in phase between the output and the input. It's said that a capacitor causes a 90° lag of voltage behind current, while an inductor causes a 90° lag of current behind voltage.

What is a cutoff frequency for a capacitor?

From our experience, we would expect there to be a cutoff frequency of 53 Hz, below which there should be a 180° phase shift (no effect from capacitor) and above which there would be 180° - 90° = 90° phase shift (as well as a lot of loss). Simulation confirms our suspicions: Figure 8.

Are electronic phase shifters a good choice for low and medium power applications?

As the MEMS phase shifters suffer from temperature-related reliability issues and the brittleness of micromachined structures, electronic phase shifters remain the natural choice for low and medium-power applications.

Does high tuning capacitance reduce the bandwidth of a phase shifter?

However, its poor return loss at high tuning capacitance narrows the bandwidth. To improve the return loss and phase range, an artificial transmission line composed of a varactor-tuned transformer and varactor loads was used to design a phase shifter with a total phase range of 133° at mm-wave frequencies.

How does a shunt capacitor affect a resistive load?

For frequencies beyond the cutoff frequency, the phase approaches its asymptotic value of -90°. This response models the phase shift caused by every shunt capacitor. A shunt capacitor will cause between 0° and -90° phase shift on a resistive load. It’s important to be aware of the attenuation too, of course.

Which phase shifter provides more than 80° differential phase shift at 20 GHz?

Shown in Figure 11 (d), the realized phase shifter provided more than 80° differential phase shift at 20 GHz. The gap waveguide technology was also used to implement LC phase shifters as in , where a phase shifter was designed to obtain a 387° phase range with an insertion loss ranging from 3.5 dB to 5.5 dB at 20 GHz.
