How do you calculate the capacitance of a variable capacitor?

The capacitance seems to be a straightforward linear function of rotation angle. For a variable capacitor like this, which is representative only, with maximum capacitance being when the rotating blades are all interleaved with the stator blades, I defined the capacitance as C = -k1 * theta + k2, theta being 0 at the maximum capacitance value.

What is a variable capacitor?

Variable capacitors in general consists of interwoven sets of metallic plates in which one is fixed and the other is variable. These capacitors provide the capacitance values so as to vary between 10 to 500pF. The ganged capacitor shown here is a combination of two capacitors connected together.

How do you change the capacitance of a mechanical variable capacitor?

The capacitance of a mechanical variable capacitor can be changed either by changing the separation between the plates or the area by which they overlap. If they are connected to a circuit whilst the change is made, a current may flow.

What is a variable capacitor used for tuning radios?

A variable capacitor used for tuning radios is shown in Figure 8.2.5 . One set of plates is fixed to the frame while an intersecting set of plates is affixed to a shaft. Rotating the shaft changes the amount of plate area that overlaps, and thus changes the capacitance.

What is variable capacitance?

Variable capacitance is sometimes used to convert physical phenomena into electrical signals.

What is the difference between fixed and variable capacitors?

The fixed capacitors are the ones whose value is fixed at the time of manufacturing itself and the variable ones provide us with an option to vary the value of capacitance. Let us know something about the variable capacitors whose value alters when you vary, either electrically or mechanically.
