The thermal performance of batteries is typically monitored using temperature sensors, which directly measure their surface temperature (ST). But, as a battery pack’s number of cells increases, so does its number of temperature sensors, which raises its cost and reduces its reliability.
Amongst others, the RTD and thermocouples have viewed the most applications with respect to the battery internal temperature measurement. Apart from this, the optical FBG sensor is an emerging technique in recent years showing prospective for fast and in-situ battery temperature measurement.
General Motors has also designed a product that can detect the SOC and temperature of both electrodes of LIB based on optical fiber sensing for hybrid and electric vehicles [267, 268]. Robert Bosch GmbH designed a battery monitoring unit using a glass fiber-based optical waveguide to measure the temperature of LIB .
It was found that at a charging rate of 5C, the internal sensor detected a temperature change of 4 °C compared to a change of 1.5 °C detected by the external sensor, demonstrating that the internal temperature monitoring can better reflect the internal thermal behavior of the battery.
