Asked about whether the company intends to source lithium materials from Serbia, founder and CEO Nemanja Mikać told Balkan Green Energy News that the plan is to import the commodities. "Chancellor Scholz has offered Germany's support for Serbia to develop a more extensive lithium production value chain, which will bring us billions in investments," Vucic added.
The interest in developing lithium deposits in the Western Balkans is part of a wider push to exploit the mineral across Europe. Demand for the world’s lightest metal, lithium, is forecast to grow strongly in the coming decade as car manufacturers ramp up production of electric vehicles (EVs).
A proposed lithium mine in Serbia is spurring protests over its potential impact on the environment. The mineral is in high demand because it’s crucial for the batteries that run electric vehicles.
Scholz said the deal would help ensure that Europe remains "sovereign in a changing world" and "is not dependent on others". The EU is seeking to boost European production of lithium and electric vehicle batteries to avoid becoming dependent upon China.
