In this overview, we go over the past and present of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) as a successful case of technology transfer from the research bench to commercialization. The evolution of LFP technologies provides valuable guidelines for further improvement of LFP batteries and the rational design of next-generation batteries.
Since its first introduction by Goodenough and co-workers, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4, LFP) became one of the most relevant cathode materials for Li-ion batteries and is also a promising candidate for future all solid-state lithium metal batteries.
Lithium iron phosphate batteries officially surpassed ternary batteries in 2021 with 52% of installed capacity. Analysts estimate that its market share will exceed 60% in 2024.
