Does Côte d'Ivoire need solar power?

Washington D.C., November 15, 2019 – The World Bank Group, through its Scaling Solar program, and the Government of Côte d’Ivoire have signed an agreement to help Côte d’Ivoire develop its supply of affordable, reliable clean energy and reach its goal of generating at least 42 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2030.

Will Côte d'Ivoire have a low-cost solar system?

In the case of a low-cost solar scenario, PV capacity is up to 24 GW and storage is nearly 15 GW between 2030 and 2050. In closing its economic gap with emerging markets, Côte d’Ivoire will face a substantial increase in electricity demand over the next three decades.

Why is Côte d'Ivoire launching a solar power plant?

“The solar power plant is regarded as a model project for the expansion of solar energy in Côte d’Ivoire. It is an important contribution to the fight against climate change and a decisive step towards increasing the share of renewable energies in the country’s electricity supply to 45% by 2030,” said KfW.

Will solar power supply increase in Côte d'Ivoire by 2050?

We develop a TIMES model of the electricity sector for Côte d'Ivoire that provides least-cost solutions for power systems. Our estimates show that electricity demand could increase by a factor of 4.5 by 2050. Least cost solutions show that solar PV could provide at least 18% of total electricity generation in 2050.

Does Côte d'Ivoire have a commitment to green energy?

According to its National Determined Contribution (NDC) of 2015, the share of green energy in the electricity mix is expected to reach 42% and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from this sector are not expected to exceed 9.2 Gt of CO 2 eq in 2030. 2 To date, Côte d’Ivoire has not made any other quantitative commitment beyond 2030.

How will Scaling Solar help Côte d'Ivoire?

Under the agreement with Côte d’Ivoire, Scaling Solar will support the development, tendering, and financing of two utility projects in the country, which has West Africa’s third largest electrical system with an installed generation capacity of 2,200 megawatts (MW).
