Due to the reasons outlined above, studies focusing on China’s solar radiation resources and solar energy potential based on observational data tend to be restricted to a limited spatial and temporal horizon, which may introduce significant uncertainties in the results.
Despite numerous studies assessing China’s wind and solar potential, most of them have led to misunderstandings regarding the data used. For instance, different studies have estimated China’s geographic potential for photovoltaic power from 4.97E + 05 ∼ 3.80E + 06 km 2 per year , , , .
Currently, the capacity of PV in China is growing rapidly. By the end of 2020, the cumulative installed capacity of PV in China had reached 253 GW, with a growth of 23.5% compared to 2019. The new growth of installed capacity of PV was 48.2 GW, which topped the 2020 global solar energy market (IRENA, 2020).
The main findings of this study are five. First, results show that China can obtain 12,900–15,000 TWh/yr from wind energy resources and 3100–5200 TWh/yr from solar. The upper bound of electricity generation potential from both wind and solar resources is three times the demand in 2019, and one-and-a-half times the demand expected for 2050.
China's newly installed photovoltaic capacity has ranked first in the world in recent years. Timely and accurate monitoring of the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of solar power plants is essential to optimize China's renewable energy power distribution and achieve carbon reduction targets.
Wind and solar energy assessment mainly uses reanalysis datasets (such as NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction), MERRA (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications), ERA (ECMWF Re-Analysis), CMA (China Meteorological Administration)) and meteorological station observation data , .
