An overview of existing and future solar power stations. A solar collector, the special energy exchanger, converts solar irradiation energy either to the thermal energy of the working fluid in solar thermal applications, or to the electric energy directly in PV (Photovoltaic) applications.
In these applications, solar collectors and thermal energy storage systems are the two core components. This paper focuses on the latest developments and advances in solar thermal applications, providing a review of solar collectors and thermal energy storage systems.
A photovoltaic thermal collector (PVTC) is a device that simultaneously transforms solar radiation into electrical and thermal energy (Fig. 2). The PVTC can be described in basic form as the open solar collector integrated with a flat surface and mounted with a PV module (Yazdanifard and Ameri, 2018).
Hybrid PV/T solar collectors can be considered either as PV modules combined with a cooling component that can deliver a useful thermal output (hot water or air), or as thermal collectors with PV cells incorporated into the design in order to generate additional electricity.
