In 2022, the estimated average battery price stood at about USD 150 per kWh, with the cost of pack manufacturing accounting for about 20% of total battery cost, compared to more than 30% a decade earlier. Pack production costs have continued to decrease over time, down 5% in 2022 compared to the previous year.
The cost of battery packs has dropped 20% to $115 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2024, according to BNEF’s annual battery price survey. An overcapacity in cell production, lower metal and component prices and the continued shift to using cheaper lithium iron phosphate batteries drove the decline, the survey said.
According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s (BNEF) annual battery price survey, lithium-ion battery pack prices averaged $132 per kilowatt hour in 2021—down from $140 per kilowatt hour in 2020. Inside each electric vehicle battery pack are multiple interconnected modules made up of tens to hundreds of rechargeable Lithium-ion cells.
There are two main drivers. One is technological innovation. We're seeing multiple new battery products that have been launched that feature about 30% higher energy density and lower cost. The second driver is a continued downturn in battery metal prices. That includes lithium and cobalt, and nearly 60% of the cost of batteries is from metals.
Turmoil in battery metal markets led the cost of Li-ion battery packs to increase for the first time in 2022, with prices rising to 7% higher than in 2021. However, the price of all key battery metals dropped during 2023, with cobalt, graphite and manganese prices falling to lower than their 2015-2020 average by the end of 2023.
BNEF expects average battery pack prices to drop again next year, reaching $133/kWh (in real 2023 dollars). Localizing battery manufacturing in regions such as the US and Europe could put upward pressure on battery pack prices due to higher costs associated with energy, equipment, land, and labor compared to Asia.
