What is a N Battery?

N batteries are small, stocky cylindrical batteries about three-fifths the size of a standard AA battery. They are 30.2 mm long with a diameter of 12.0 mm. N battery cells come in a variety of chemistries and depending on the brand, you’ll find them with one of the following designations:

What is the difference between A23 and N Battery?

The A23 battery has physical dimensions (height and width) of 10.3 x 28.5 mm. In contrast, the N battery is 12.0 x 30.2 mm. They have comparable dimensions; however, they are not interchangeable. A23s are designed for high capacity devices with a nominal voltage of 12 volts.

What was the earliest battery shape?

The earliest battery shape was the jar design. In 1896, large F cells were introduced and were followed by D cells in 1898. C cells were the first small-size batteries introduced in 1900, followed by the still popular AA batteries introduced in 1907. At present, batteries come mainly in the following shapes:

What is standard battery nomenclature?

Standard battery nomenclature describes portable dry cell batteries that have physical dimensions and electrical characteristics interchangeable between manufacturers.

What is a battery designation system?

The current designation system was adopted in 1992. Battery types are designated with a letter/number sequence indicating number of cells, cell chemistry, cell shape, dimensions, and special characteristics. Certain cell designations from earlier revisions of the standard have been retained.

How many volts does a N Battery run?

As you can see, all N batteries operate between 1.2 and 1.5 volts. They also have a capacity of between 200 and 1000 mAh (depending on the battery chemistry). The zinc-carbon N cell uses a zinc anode and manganese oxide for the cathode. The cathode is mixed with carbon to increase the cell’s conductivity and to help it maintain moisture.
