Author to whom correspondence should be addressed. Due to variations among the cells, large lithium ion batteries (LIB) such as those in battery energy storage stations (BESS) and electric vehicles (EVs) must have an equalizer (EQU) circuit to balance the cell voltages.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) is considered a very promising technology, and PV-lithium-ion battery energy storage is widely used to obtain smoother power output. In this paper, we propose a battery equalization circuit and control strategy to improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries.
Battery equalization technology is considered to be one of the solutions to these problems . The current battery equalization technologies are mainly passive equalization and active equalization .
Currently, battery ECs can be categorized into passive equalization circuit (PEC) and active equalization circuit (AEC) [7, 8]. For the former one, PEC mainly adopts parallel resistors to dissipate the energy of the LIBs with higher energy in the form of heat to realize equalization.

Therefore, it is indispensable to propose an appropriate and effective active equalization strategy (AES) to minimize the inconsistency of LIBs, in expectation of extending the overall performance of the battery pack. A reliable equalization circuit (EC) is the foundation of developing battery AES.
