Conventional lithium-ion batteries rely on transition-metal-oxide-based materials — such as cobalt and nickel oxides — for their positive electrodes, as they offer high energy density and long cycle life.
"Sodium is a much more sustainable source for batteries [than lithium]," says James Quinn, chief executive of Faradion, the UK-based battery technology company that manufactures the sodium-ion batteries for Yarra Valley utility company Nation Energie.
The use of this resource raises concerns about the limited supply of transition metals along with the associated environmental footprint. Organic rechargeable batteries, which are transition-metal-free, eco-friendly and cost-effective, are promising alternatives to current lithium-ion batteries that could alleviate these mounting concerns.
To find promising alternatives to lithium batteries, it helps to consider what has made the lithium battery so popular in the first place. Some of the factors that make a good battery are lifespan, power, energy density, safety and affordability.
The most critical battery raw materials currently include lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese and graphite. Demand for these raw materials is expected to increase significantly in the coming years, with the World Bank forecasting that demand for lithium in 2050 will be up to five times the level it was in 2018.
Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable and used in electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops, electric toothbrushes, and other items. The batteries have several advantages, which make them a market leader over alternatives. A 2021 report in Nature projected the market for lithium-ion batteries to grow from $30 billion in 2017 to $100 billion in 2025.
