Nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries, however, typically require significantly less cobalt, approximately only 0.13 kg/kWh, as they contain mostly nickel at approximately 0.67 kg/kWh. Nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries vary on their raw material requirements depending on which member of the battery family is being used.
The reliance on cobalt in these cathodes is worrisome because it is a high-cost, rare material, with an unstable supply chain. This review describes the need and feasibility of developing cobalt-free high-nickel cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-rich nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LR-NMC) cathode materials have been considered in next-generation Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles due to their high energy density and cost-effectiveness. However, LR-NMC cathode materials suffer from poor rate capability and cyclic stability.
An increase in cobalt prices further widens the cost gap of cathode materials. In addition, the cost of cobalt significantly influences technical strategies, raw material costs, and selling price of EVs with the rapid development of global EVs, the amount of cobalt in lithium battery cathode materials urgently needs to be reduced .
While the market does appear to be moving away from batteries with a high-cobalt content, the use of lithium is here to stay, due to its stabilizing properties. Moreover, this move away from cobalt has led to the development of batteries with a higher nickel content, simply shifting the burden onto nickel reserves.
