Micro-short circuit (MSC) of a lithium-ion battery cell is a potential safety hazard for battery packs. How to identify the cell with MSC in the latent phase before a thermal runaway becomes a difficult problem to solve. We propose a diagnosis method to detect the MSC according to the remaining charging capacity (RCC) variations between cells.
Though the probability of these failure events is estimated to be very low (1 in 5–10 million), the consequences of a cell failure due to a short circuit in a high energy battery system have the potential to be catastrophic . Therefore, it is an urgent problem to detect the MSC cell during the incubation period of thermal runaway.
This is due to two main reasons: first, a short circuit in a series module can cause some cells to undergo polarity reversal (as shown in Fig. 15 C and D), potentially leading to electrode material damage, electrolyte decomposition, and gas generation, thereby accelerating battery degradation .
There are a number of things that can cause an internal short circuit within a battery cell. The primary focus has to be on manufacturing and the processes deployed to mitigate or reduce these risks. Finally, in cell formation and ageing, methods can be deployed to pick up some of these issues.
Fig. 16 presents the ESC test results of 6-series battery modules from Groups 6 and 7. Upon triggering the short circuit, the short current rapidly escalates to 150 A, and the module voltage plummets to approximately 0.5 V, as illustrated in Fig. 16 (A) and (B).
The increase of short circuit severity is often accompanied by the increase of the battery self-discharge rate and calorific value, leading to fire, and even thermal runaway and other serious problems .
