When a battery cell in the module experiences an ISC fault, the similarity between the voltage response of the faulty battery cell and that of the adjacent battery cells decreases, which is reflected in the reduction in the cosine value of the vector angle. The flowchart of the proposed diagnosis method is shown in Fig. 7. Fig. 7.
This study investigated the internal short circuit (ISC) fault diagnosis method for Li-ion (LiFePO 4) batteries in energy storage devices. A short-circuit fault diagnosis method for battery module components based on voltage cosine similarity is proposed based on the characteristics extracted from the ISC fault battery.
Such abnormal voltage data occur because the battery has experienced over-charging, over-discharging, imbalance, thermal runaway, and other faults [5, 6], causing voltage changes abnormally. Consistency anomaly detection of the battery voltage can help to achieve early warning of battery faults and avoid safety accidents in energy storage stations.
When the ISC fault occurs during charging, ΔU of the normal battery is positive, whereas that of the faulty battery is negative. In this case, the angle of the eigenvector including both the normal and faulty batteries will be surpass 90°, as indicated in Fig. 8 (a), and the algorithm can detect the fault via cosine similarity.
According to the basic principle of the cosine-similarity algorithm, this paper proposes an ISC fault-diagnosis method for battery modules. The proposed method defines the module current and changes in the monomer voltage at each time as characteristic quantities and constructs two-dimensional vectors.
To test if a large SOC inconsistency existed in the battery module, the proposed ISC fault-diagnosis method based on voltage cosine similarity was investigated if it could still respond to a simulated ISC fault without a false alarm due to inconsistency.
