The waste silver oxide button cells used in electric watches with silver contents of around 30 wt.% has been studied for the recovery of silver metal by different routes, e.g., smelting and electrowinning.
Smelting and electrolytic methods are discussed for silver recovery from this battery waste. Acid leaching of waste batteries and precipitation of silver as silver chloride followed by smelting at 1000 °C yields a silver recovery of about 83%.
It needs to point out that high-purity silver has been recovered from spent silver oxide batteries by using aqueous electrolyte. 34 This study demonstrates the first stage of an alternative possessing the abovementioned advantages of ILs.
