Sensible heat storage in molten nitrate salts is a key technology when it comes to thermal energy storage in combination with concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. Currently, a mixture of sodium and potassium nitrate called Solar Salt is used at temperatures between 280 and 560 °C.
Steel Corrosion The molten alkali nitrate salts in combination with the metallic parts of solar power plants constitute a corrosion system with the molten salt acting as an electrolyte comparable to an aqueous electrolyte.
• Interaction between liquid and particles. Among nitrate-based molten salts, Solar Salt is the mo st investigated base fluid. Dif- ment of 31.1% with 0.5%wt of silica NP . Other nitrated-based mixtures mentioned enhancements compared to those obtained in the Solar Salt case [94,100–112]. Two different chloride-based NFs have been proposed.
Table 1. Thermophysical properties of considered molten salt as HTF and/or TES in CSP. NA, not available. Bonk et al. , recently, revealed that Solar Salt has stabilized nitrite content of 5 mol% during the described time at 560 °C under open atmosphere.
These plants aim for temperature levels near the thermal stability limit of “Solar Salt” to improve the economics and the plant efficiency. In addition to the decomposition reactions, there are also side reactions with gases. Gaseous species, such as carbon dioxide and water vapor, will interact with molten alkali nitrate salts.
