The main objectives of this project are to lower the cost, reducing the risks and to optimize performance of high temperature (~25 to ~90°C) underground thermal energy storage technologies by demonstrating 6 distinct configurations of heat sources, heat storage, and heat utilization.
The main objectives of project HEATSTORE are to lower the cost, reduce risks, improve the performance of high temperature (~25°C to ~90°C) underground thermal energy storage (HT-UTES) technologies and to optimize heat network demand side management (DSM).
The experience with developing the demonstration projects clearly showed that energy storage and demand side management (DSM) technologies often have multiple value drivers, not only one single driver that carries the business case. Also clear is that the business case of UTES technologies is rather complex due to case-by-case specifications.
HEATSTORE LESSONS The project will be over halfway in 2020. In April 2020 most likely more news can be shared on the characterisation of the UTES sites and technical realisation of pilots and demo plants. At the moment of writing the following important lessons can already be shared on UTES technologies.
Denmark: the performance of Pit Thermal Energy Storages in Marstal, Dronninglund and Gram, and Borehole Thermal Energy Storage in Brædstrup will be evaluated, as well as a number of shallow Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage plants.
CONCLUSIONS Thermal energy storage technologies need to be developed and become an integral component in the future energy system infrastructure to meet variations in both the availability and demand of energy.
