Does the pitch system fail more often in larger turbines?

Besides the component category “Position, Angle and Speed measurement”, there is a trend for all other components of the electrical pitch system failing more often in larger turbines as well. For the components of the hydraulic pitch system of OEM1 no clear trend can be observed.

What is a pitch system?

The pitch system is notably one of the critical subsystems of a wind turbine, supporting its effective control towards maximising wind capture and at the same time protecting its integrity in cases of excessive loads.

What causes a pitch fault in a WTG?

Slip ring pollution and pitch controller malfunction are two dominant causes to pitch faults in electrical pitch systems of WTGs . The slip ring mounted between the rotor and the nacelle to deliver the control signals, data and electrical power. Polluted slip ring causes poor communication and pitching malfunction.

What are the characteristics of a pitch control system?

Different designs of the pitch control systems result in different characteristics of the pitch angle . Generally, the pitch angle is increased to reduce the wind power captured by the turbine when wind speed is above a certain threshold.

Does a hydraulic pitch system have a low failure rate?

While for the electrical pitch system significantly lower failure rates are found (compare Fig. 5), the upper boundary of the confidence interval of the hydraulic pitch system for medium WT rated capacity differs only slightly (compare Fig. 6).

Why was the inspection of the pitch system not carried out immediately?

Because the wind speed is higher than vr when the WTG alarm was activated, the inspection of the pitch system could not be carry out immediately to ensure safety of personnel. The inspection was carried out and the pitch controller was replaced on 2/Apr/2015.
