Investment in modern technologies, such as composting equipment, is necessary for successful waste management in Tehran. Additionally, proper inspection procedures and effective leachate management will mitigate environmental and health impact in waste transfer stations, processing, and disposal facilities.
Collection system coverage is high in Tehran (about 100%) but inefficient. Furthermore, there is no comprehensive program for the collection of household hazardous wastes. Landfilling methods do not match national and international standards as there is no groundwater protection system in place, and the LFG is not captured.
Overall, a collaborative approach, emphasizing personnel training, infrastructure enhancement, public awareness campaigns, and research and development, is pivotal in establishing an effective and sustainable waste management system in Tehran.
Tehran municipality is currently negotiating with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education to secure its participation in hospital waste management in order to optimize the system and minimize its health and environmental risks.
Even in 2008, almost 87% of the city’s waste was disposed of into this landfill. In Iran, the current Waste Management law, which encompasses 23 articles and 9 notes, is intended for the management of all types of waste.
