As the largest battery producer, assessing the environmental impacts of China's battery-related minerals and technologies is crucial. However, studies that address the integrated issues of supply risks, vulnerability, and environmental impacts are relatively scarce for China.
The batteries have different environmental impacts in different phases of their life. Among the four phases listed in the table, the battery has the most serious pollution to the environment in the ‘Use Phase’, followed by the ‘Production Phase’, and then the ‘Transport Phase’.

To name a few, the environmental impacts of NCM batteries, NiMH batteries, and LiFePO 4 batteries in the production phase were compared in MajeauBettez et al. (2011) and it was found that NiMH batteries have the highest environmental burden in the production process. Similar work was also reported in Olofsson and Romare, 2013, Dunn et al., 2010.
From the assessment results of the 11 evaluation indices, it is found that the batteries will generate environmental pollution mainly in five aspects. They are (2) Abiotic depletion (fossil fuels), (3) Global warming (GWP 100a), (5) Human toxicity, (6) Fresh water aquatic ecotoxicity, and (7) Marine aquatic ecotoxicity;
