ABSTRACT: Small leakage currents flow between the frame and the active cell matrix in photovoltaic (PV) modules under normal operation conditions due to the not negligible electric conductivity of the module build-ing materials.
Predominantly the DC part of the leak-age current can cause significant electrochemical corrosion of cell and frame metals, potential-induced degradation (PID) of the shunting type and PID of the solar cells’ sur-face passivation [1,2,3].
Wet leakage current test: is an electrical safety test, too. The purpose is to evaluate the insulation of the module against moisture penetration under wet operating conditions (rain, fog, dew, melted snow), to avoid corrosion, ground fault and thus electric shock hazard.
The leakage current was measured between the backrail and the module connectors and between a copper strap on the front glass and the module connectors. In comparison to the mounting by backrail, the leakage current of the copper strap connection is 2.5 times smaller.
In a conventional multicrystalline silicon PV module, the possible conduits for leakage current from the module frame to the solar cells (or vice versa) are via the surface and bulk of the front glass and encapsulation (Luo et al., 2017, Yamaguchi et al., 2020).
Failure of wet leakage current test due to faulty connectors is not a rare event, and as such, it definitely represents a real hazard for operators in the field. There is no IEC standard addressing PV connectors, but there is a harmonized European standard (EN 50521).
