A novel series capacitor voltage balancing strategy was proposed to use in modular matrix-converter-based smart transformers, which are suited for the high voltage scenarios and or multiple ports. The capacitor voltage balance strategy considering the capacitance difference. The conclusions are made as follows:
The discharge of capacitor banks at substations is necessary before their connection to the grid can occur. This study investigates the use of delta-connected transformers for capacitor discharge. The energy from the capacitor banks is discharged by driving the transformers into saturation after disconnection from the grid.
This paper has shown the relationship between transformer size, discharge resistor size and the discharge time of the capacitor banks. The optimal results for the capacitor bank and transformer combination have been listed, with a variety of economical and effective solutions produced.
A capacitor voltage balancing strategy with n -capacitors in series should be devised. It should develop from the balancing strategy of two capacitors in series. The results obtained also show that using very small transformers of ∼0.001 MVA will result in very fast discharge of the 10 MVAR capacitor bank. The results are also constant for different values of the discharge resistor.
By adding an offset in the carrier wave, the proposed capacitor voltage balance strategy can balance the input capacitor voltage which is beneficial for the high-frequency transformer. The small signal model is established and the results show that the balancing strategy will not affect the stability.
