Never solder on devices that are powered on or plugged in. Unplug, turn off, and remove power sources before soldering. Don't solder directly to hard-shell lithium-ion batteries (such as 18650 cells). The heat from the soldering iron will damage the battery internals. Use a battery spot welder instead.
1. Heat up the solder you want to remove with a soldering iron (some desoldering pumps also come with attached irons). 2. Press down on the plunger (If your pump has a bulb, just squeeze the bulb). 3. Once the solder is molten, place the tip of the desoldering pump against the solder that you want to remove.
Keep the Battery cool. Heat will cause damage to the battery. The easiest way to do that is to solder as quickly as possible. Crank up the iron a bit ( I'm using 380C). Get fat tip for the iron. The chunkier it is the better. Its mass will make sure that it won't cool down as you're soldering. Clean up the surface before soldering.
Primarily, you should use a desoldering braid similar to the solder joint you want to remove. Still, it will be okay if you choose a braid that is a bit wider. Use a soldering iron. At this step, drill a hole in the solder joint you're removing to put the braid in the opening. Next, place a soldering iron just above the hole.
Don't solder directly to hard-shell lithium-ion batteries (such as 18650 cells). The heat from the soldering iron will damage the battery internals. Use a battery spot welder instead. Be extremely careful if you're soldering/desoldering lithium-polymer battery wires!
Good news! (Especially for those of you with older Iso-Tip soldering irons.) We’ve learned that Batteries Plus performs battery repair for Iso-Tip soldering irons. So, if you happen to own a model we no longer manufacture, Batteries Plus may be able to help extend the tool’s life by rebuilding the battery.
