The electrolyte in a lead-acid battery is a solution of sulfuric acid, while the electrodes are mostly constructed of lead and lead oxide. Positive plates of lead-acid batteries that are discharged primarily contain lead dioxide, while negative plates primarily contain lead.
In 1881, Camille Alphonse Faure invented an improved version that consisted of a lead grid lattice, into which a lead oxide paste was pressed, forming a plate. This design was easier to mass-produce. An early manufacturer (from 1886) of lead–acid batteries was Henri Tudor.
In applications, a nominal 12V lead-acid battery is frequently created by connecting six single-cell lead-acid batteries in series.
