Charging and Discharging Definition: Charging is the process of restoring a battery’s energy by reversing the discharge reactions, while discharging is the release of stored energy through chemical reactions. Oxidation Reaction: Oxidation happens at the anode, where the material loses electrons.
Rapid charge/discharge rates can also cause high heat generation, leading to thermal runaway and damage to the battery’s electrolyte and electrodes. This review provides an underlying issue related to fast charging and discharging and explores their impact on the battery’s performance and lifespan.
All battery parameters are affected by battery charging and recharging cycle. A key parameter of a battery in use in a PV system is the battery state of charge (BSOC). The BSOC is defined as the fraction of the total energy or battery capacity that has been used over the total available from the battery.
When the battery reaches its full charge cut-off voltage, constant voltage mode takes over, and there is a drop in the charging current. The charging current keeps coming down until it reaches below 0.05C. The battery reaches full charge voltage some time after the CV mode starts (as soon as one of the cells reaches its full charge voltage).
The remaining literature is summarized in Table 1 and shows that for NMC batteries, charging rates above 1C rate adversely affects the battery life whereas, for LFP batteries, the battery life is not significantly affected by charging rates up to 4C. Table 1: Literature on the influence of charging rate on battery degradation
In particular, high charging/discharging currents imply a significant increasing of the battery temperature. Therefore, in order to estimate the effect of the current rate on battery aging, it is not correct to maintain a constant room temperature using climatic chambers as done in other works presented in the literature.
