China is dominant in every aspect of electric vehicle battery technology. Now the rest of the world is trying to catch up. SCOTT SIMON, HOST: When it comes to supply chains for the electric vehicle industry, China is far ahead for the number of batteries and EV cars that it produces.
Chinese stakeholders are not taking the status quo for granted. In January, a Tsinghua University professor warned China could lose its lead in batteries if it was not prepared for the risks posed by the rise of new technology.
Industry bodies estimate that there are roughly 50 Chinese EV battery groups producing in the world’s largest car market, leading to a survival game that is set to intensify as they face fierce competition for technology and stricter government regulations.
From 2020 to 2023, China’s global EV exports increased by 851 percent, with the largest share of those exports (nearly 40 percent) going to Europe. Collectively, Chinese EV and EV battery enterprises have at least equaled—and in some cases surpassed—their Western peers in innovation capacity and product quality.
It’s too soon to declare victory in the war for the next generation of battery technology. However, it is currently hard to imagine China losing its edge in both mass production and innovation. Opting out of those products will make electric cars more expensive and less sophisticated.
