BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Chinese electric battery company CATL and automaker Stellantis will build a major battery factory in northern Spain, the partners announced Tuesday. They said the plant will be located in Zaragoza and start producing lithium iron phosphate batteries by the end of 2026.
CATL and other Chinese battery makers are far ahead in the critical area of producing batteries for electric vehicles. Northvolt, Europe’s great hope for catching up, filed for bankruptcy last month. Stellantis includes the Chrysler, Citroen, Dodge, Jeep, Peugeot, Fiat, Opel and Alfa Romeo brands, among others.
Europe has been seeking to attract EV battery makers to build factories in the region - home to car makers such as Volkswagen and Stellantis - as it tries to cut a reliance on Asia and win a green subsidies race with the United States. VOTE ABSTENTION
The decision to build the plant in Ontario, Canada's most populous province and a key industrial engine of the country, was announced last month. The battery plant is expected to be Volkswagen's largest and create up to 3,000 jobs. Groundbreaking is planned for 2024 and production is projected to begin by 2027, the carmaker said.
