After the success of Greece’s first energy storage auction in July this year, the government has changed the terms ahead of the upcoming second and third ones. Hopes are high for the upcoming second energy storage auction in Greece, scheduled to take place by the end of this year.
Greece has emerged as one of the countries with the largest pipeline of battery storage projects, but as yet there has been little activity on the ground. This is changing as the long-awaited storage subsidy auctions have started, with the first projects being awarded support for both investment and operating costs.
The Greek authorities have awarded 300 MW of new battery storage capacity in its second energy storage tender. The 11 winning projects range in size from 8.875 MW/17.75 MWh to 49.9 MW/100 MWh.
The introduction and development of storage on Greece’s islands that are that are not connected to the mainland power system is quite different, as it is currently only possible via hybrid stations (i.e. virtual production stations consisting of renewable energy resources and storage units operating as single distribution entities).
Greece is planning two more auctions this year. One is set for the third quarter, for 300 MW, plus what capacity remains from the first tender. The third bidding is scheduled to take place in the fourth quarter for 300 MW, bringing the total capacity for storage auctions this year to 1 GW.
The development of storage in Greece has only just begun: this year has been the big "kick-start" and there is now a common understanding of the needs and requirements and the steps to be taken to ensure an adequate identification and prioritization of all necessary actions.
