Does mass production of graphene have a low environmental impact?

This result confirms the possibility for mass production of graphene with a low environmental impact provided by the laboratory scale analysis presented in the following sections; the results can be considered as a capping limit on the impact for the scaling up of processes towards industrial scale, which should be further reduced.

Researchers reviewed the current research into the safety of graphene and related materials looking at both human health and environmental impact. As the drive to commercialise graphene continues, it is important that all safety aspects are thoroughly researched and understood.

What are the environmental risks of graphene?

One estimate suggests that the global graphene market will reach US$3.85 billion by 2034. Yet, the associated environmental risks are often overlooked. Making graphene requires substantial quantities of sulfuric acid, water and energy, and generates hazardous by-products (R. Arvidsson Adv. Mat. Lett. 8, 187–195; 2017).

The synthesized graphene exhibited higher specific surface areas and conductivity values compared to battery-grade graphite.

Can go and RGO produce graphene at industrial scale?

We have applied life cycle assessment methodology to evaluate the environmental impacts of both production routes for GO and rGO in the context of applications requiring bulk materials or thin coatings. We find no current obstacle to the industrial scale production of graphene arising from its environmental impact.

Does surface chemistry affect cytotoxicity of graphene?

Hence, rGO particles produced a 5-fold increase in cytotoxicity when compared to GO, suggesting that the surface chemistry of graphene including the amount of oxygen functionalities, may play a role. The possible cardiovascular impact of other 2D materials, e.g., MoS 2 and hBN, remains to be understood.
