Can a ship be retrofitted with a battery system?

Build a vessel that will use a diesel or gas based power system that can easily be retrofitted with batteries in the future. This can be a good option for ships under construction or existing conventional designs. Build or retrofit a vessel with battery system and engines/motors installed and ready to run on battery from first day of operation.

How many times a battery is replaced in a ship?

The emissions of the manufacturing process of the replacement batteries are also considered. Since the battery life is given as the number of battery cycles, and approximately all ships reach an equal number of battery cycles in a lifetime, the batteries are replaced several times (Pb-acid: 32 times, Ni-MH: 16 times, Li-ion: 3 times).

How long does a marine battery last?

Saft’s high-tech marine batteries ensure the proper functioning of control boards and propulsion, including the full- or hybrid-electric architecture increasingly seen as a strong alternative to conventional propulsion. A marine battery system can last for decades with careful specification and treatment.

What are the main priorities for a battery system for maritime applications?

Main priorities for a battery system for maritime applications are safety, reliability and sufficient life for the system to be economically feasible. All components in the battery systems must be of good quality to secure a safe and reliable system throughout the system’s lifetime.

What are the requirements for a battery powered vessel?

For battery powered vessels, the battery system shall have sufficient useable energy for safe return to port also if one battery system fails. Battery space shall be accessible for replacement of parts of the system. Battery spaces shall provide protection against external hazards (e.g. fire, mechanical impact).

Can a diesel-powered ship be replaced with a lithium-ion battery?

The LCCA comparison of existing and alternative all-electric power systems with different batteries. The LCA results in Fig. 5 indicate that the most environmentally friendly option to replace the diesel-powered ship is electrification with a Li-ion battery.
