The AC response method to measure capacitance is done by passing a known high-frequency alternating current through the device and recording the resulting voltage across it. From the ratio of these the magnitude of the impedance is calculated.
Several circuit architectures for capacitance measurements have been proposed, where only a few of them consider lossy capacitances , . In the authors classify capacitance measurement circuits to mainly four categories, which are resonance methods, oscillation methods, charge/discharge methods, and AC bridge methods.
The investigation focuses on the capacitance range from 1 pF–1 nF, as this range is common for many capacitive sensors’ applications. Most capacitance-to-voltage measurement circuits employ a current-to-voltage conversion circuit (s. Fig. 3 (a)), which is called trans-impedance amplifiers (TIA), a current sensing circuit, or a current transducer.
We classify the capacitance measurement circuits into six categories and address their properties and implementation aspects and compare their performance in a wide the capacitance range. The comparison shows that immunity to stray capacitances and conductive losses is not always given.
Most capacitance-to-voltage measurement circuits employ a current-to-voltage conversion circuit (s. Fig. 3 (a)), which is called trans-impedance amplifiers (TIA), a current sensing circuit, or a current transducer. An optional small capacitance on the feedback loop is often used to stabilize the architecture and to avoid self-oscillations .
Application Note MPA-CB1 Rev. There are three main ways of measuring capacitance: DC charge/discharge, AC response and bridge methods. The first method is only applicable to RC while the latter two to LCR measurements.
