The most reliable test for the determination of the SOC of a battery — i.e. its remaining capacity — is a discharge test under controlled conditions. But such a test, which usually includes a consecutive recharge, is too time consuming to be considered for most applications. As a second drawback during testing the system function is interrupted.
The most simple loss estimation method is to apply a constant charge factor to the battery at each recharge, i.e. a constant loss is assumed and this loss is additionally returned to the battery. Such a method is only suitable for systems that are not too sensitive to overcharge.
In fact, conductance measurements at a given frequency are performed on batteries for quality control and provide information about state-of-health.
