A new type of lead acid battery, the lead air battery, designed by altering the lead dioxide electrode to the air electrode, is put forward in this research. Two models are developed for simulating the activation polarization and time dependent processes respectively.
Voltage of lead acid battery upon charging. The charging reaction converts the lead sulfate at the negative electrode to lead. At the positive terminal the reaction converts the lead to lead oxide. As a by-product of this reaction, hydrogen is evolved.
The specific capacity oflead air battery is higher than lead acid battery. The amount of lead per energy unit in lead air battery is smaller than lead acid battery. A new type of lead acid battery, the lead air battery, designed by altering the lead dioxide electrode to the air electrode, is put forward in this research.
Electrode potentials and cell voltage for a typical flooded lead–acid battery As charging proceeds, the potentials keep gradually increasing until end of charge is reached. At this point, all lead sulfate is converted to lead on the negative electrode and to lead dioxide on the positive; and the charge is complete.
At present, the research interests on the next generation of lead acid batteries is gradually increasing. The next generation of lead acid batteries still utilizes lead as active material and is expected toexpand the applicable scope of lead acid battery and to reduce the amount of lead per energy unit.
These batteries are either classified as flooded (vented) or sealed. Flooded and sealed batteries also differ in their operation. All lead-acid batteries produce hydrogen and oxygen gas (gassing) at the electrodes during charging through a process called electrolysis.
