Coal char materials were modified to obtain desired porous structure, surface properties, and turbostratic nanodomains. Modified coal char materials exhibited stable cycling performance in both Li-ion batteries and Na-ion batteries. A practical Li-ion full cell maintained a capacity retention of 73.2% at 1C over 500 cycles. 1. Introduction
In a pouch-type LIB full cell powered by a modified coal char anode and LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 cathode, a capacity retention of 73.2% was achieved at 1C after 500 cycles. The modified coal char materials can be directly applied toward tailored energy storage systems without intensive processing.
Nevertheless, many former fossil fuel power plants around the world are being repurposed for batteries. In the Lusatia region of Germany, there is an intricate system of coal mines and thermal power plants operated by the energy company LEAG.
Energy produced by such turbines can go to waste if it can't be stored. So, the island is turning to a new generation of batteries designed to stockpile massive amounts of energy — a critical step toward replacing power plants fueled by coal, gas and oil, which create a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.
In comparison, most of the previous works based on coal-derived anodes for LIBs and SIBs involved an energy intensive graphitization process to convert coal char into graphite or carbon nanotubes.
