“We mostly rely on imports for materials to make batteries,” said Sohn Jung-soo, a researcher at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. “We need to start obtaining the raw materials that we're importing by ourselves.” Local battery makers are focusing on nickel and cobalt supplies.
GUNSAN, South Korea (Reuters) - Workers at a rural South Korean factory are busy extracting some of the world's most coveted metals, used in the batteries that power electric cars. But they're not digging in the ground or refining ore. Instead, they are sorting through a pile of lithium-ion batteries from old mobile phones and laptops.
Most existing LIBs use aluminum for the mixed-metal oxide cathode and copper for the graphite anode, with the exception of lithium titanate (Li4Ti5, LTO) which uses aluminum for both . The cathode materials are typically abbreviated to three letters, which then become the descriptors of the battery itself.
Many lithium mines, led by Chinese operators, are maintaining production of the raw material needed for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, in defiance of prices weak enough to trigger mass output cuts - providing a boon for battery makers.
Key materials like lithium, nickel and cobalt make up one-third of battery costs, and the ability to acquire them will determine the competitiveness of battery companies and even EVs. “We mostly rely on imports for materials to make batteries,” said Sohn Jung-soo, a researcher at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources.
Provided by the Springer Nature SharedIt content-sharing initiative Policies and ethics The growth in the electric vehicle (EV) and the associated lithium-ion battery (LIB) market globally has been both exponential and inevitable. This is mainly due to the drive toward sustainability through the electrification of transport.
