Grid energy storage, also known as large-scale energy storage, are technologies connected to the electrical power grid that store energy for later use. These systems help balance supply and demand by storing excess electricity from variable renewables such as solar and inflexible sources like nuclear power, releasing it when needed.
The technologies that are most suitable for grid-scale electricity storage are in the top right corner, with high powers and discharge times of hours or days (but not weeks or months). These are Pumped Hydropower, Hydrogen, Compressed air and Cryogenic Energy Storage (also known as ‘Liquid Air Energy Storage’ (LAES)).
In order to cope with both high and low load situations, as well as the increasing amount of renewable energy being fed into the grid, the storage of electricity is of great importance. However, the large-scale storage of electricity in the grid is still a major challenge and subject to research and development.
