How do they work, and how can you get the most out of them? Most modern mobile devices use lithium ion (sometimes called Li-ion) batteries, which consist of two main parts: a pair of electrodes and the electrolyte between them.
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are outstanding candidates that could potentially replace Li-ion batteries. With respect to large-scale stationary energy storage systems for energy grids in sustainable energy networks of wind and solar energy, low-cost SIBs are expected to be produced at lower cost than that of Li-ion batteries in the future 143 - 146.
Li-ion batteries convert chemical energy into electrical energy via redox reactions between the active materials, which comprise the electrodes. A typical Li-ion battery consists of an electrolyte, a separator, a positive electrode (cathode) and a negative electrode (anode), as shown in the schematic representation in Fig. 7.
Li-ion batteries are highly advanced as compared to other commercial rechargeable batteries, in terms of gravimetric and volumetric energy. Figure 2 compares the energy densities of different commercial rechargeable batteries, which clearly shows the superiority of the Li-ion batteries as compared to other batteries 6.
