This study investigated the internal short circuit (ISC) fault diagnosis method for Li-ion (LiFePO 4) batteries in energy storage devices. A short-circuit fault diagnosis method for battery module components based on voltage cosine similarity is proposed based on the characteristics extracted from the ISC fault battery.
The fault diagnosis is a critical task for the battery management system of LIB [6, 7].The safety hazards of LIBs are usually caused by the well-known thermal runaway, and the internal short circuit (ISC) fault has been well-recognized as one of the critical mechanisms causing the thermal runaway .
Comparison of the similarity between these two-dimensional vectors implies measurement and comparison of the similarity of the voltage response of the adjacent battery cells under the same excitation at the same time. The short-circuit fault in the battery can then be diagnosed using the similarity of response.
A battery management system (BMS) is critical to ensure the reliability, efficiency and longevity of LIBs. Recent research has witnessed the emergence of model-based fault diagnosis methods for LIBs in advanced BMSs. This paper provides a comprehensive review on these methods.
Given the intricate multi-layer internal structure of a LIB and the electrothermal coupling effect caused by faults, establishing a well-balanced battery model between fidelity and complexity poses a critical challenge to battery fault diagnosis.
