This study used a PV power generation potential assessment system based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods to investigate the PV power generation potential in China.
In this study, we combined high-density and high-accuracy station-based solar radiation data from more than 2400 stations and a solar PV electricity generation model to map the technical potential for solar PV generation in China, while simultaneously considering land constraints through geographic information system technology.
Province-level solar PV supply curves in China were constructed. PV technical potential was estimated around 39.6 PWh to 442 PWh. The uncertainty of PV technical potential was quantified. The cost of PV ranges from 0.12 CNY/kWh to 7.93 CNY/kWh. China's PV economic potential far exceeds its projected electricity demand.
However, most of the PV potential in China is distributed in sparsely populated regions such as northwest and Tibet of China, and more than 95% of PV power generation in these areas is centralized PV power generation .
According to the projection of Chinese scholar, the total electricity demand of China will reach at least 15 PWh by 2060, and thus 20.6% of the total technical potential of solar PV power generation can be developed to meet this electricity demand. Fig. 11.
