Chapters 3 and 4 cover the economics and costing of coal power generation including capital costs, operation and maintenance (O&M) costs, the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE), the parameters that influence these costs as well as a cost analysis section which includes CCS costing. What the future holds for coal is discussed in Chapter 5.
PCC is the most commonly used technology in coal-fired power plants and is based on many decades of experience. The units operate close to atmospheric pressure which simplifies the passage of material through the plant. The coal is first pulverised to a fine powder and then blown with part of the combustion air through a series of burners.
However, current coal-fired power generation is in competition with renewable energy and thus generation has shifted in many countries from baseload to load following mode necessitating flexibility in power plant operations. As such, frequent cycling of coal-fired power plants can cause thermal and pressure stresses.
The primary objective of the project is to develop guidelines for planning and cost assessment in relation to making future coal-fired plants in developing APEC economies ‘capture-ready’ as an aid to capacity building on carbon capture and storage in these economies. 2. Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage
The operational flexibility of coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) should be effectively enhanced to accommodate large-scale photovoltaic and wind power within the power grid. The integration of thermal energy storage (TES) systems is a potential way to enlarge the load-cycling range of CFPPs.
As these plants are more advanced, they are inherently more expensive. In general, all coal-fired power generating units have additional costs due to flexible operation not only in fuel costs but also in additional wear and tear. 38 Intermittent high demand for electricity can be met by plants operating at peak load.
