Three element factors of lithium ion battery combustion under overcharge were clarified. The location of the ignition point at a charge rate of 2C was determined. To clarify the evolution of thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries under overcharge, the prismatic lithium-ion batteries are overcharged at various current rates in air and argon.
Prevention of Overcharging: Proper handling and charging practices can prevent overcharging of lithium batteries. Firstly, it’s essential to use the correct charger for the specific battery type because using an incorrect charger can cause overcharging.
Therefore, it is very meaningful to study the overcharge behavior of high-power type lithium-ion batteries (maximum discharge rate 50 C). In addition, previous studies [ 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21] are based on the condition that the battery is continuously charged until thermal runaway.
In this study, a high-power type lithium-ion battery with NCM111 as the positive electrode was used for overcharging tests at different current rates with battery rupture as the warning sign.
In this paper, the overcharge performance of a commercial pouch lithium-ion battery with Li y (NiCoMn) 1/3 O 2 -Li y Mn 2 O 4 composite cathode and graphite anode is evaluated under various test conditions, considering the effects of charging current, restraining plate and heat dissipation.
The effects of charging current, restraining plate and heat dissipation condition on the overcharge performance of a 40 Ah lithium-ion battery are evaluated. The batteries overcharge behaviors show only minor changes with the increase of charging current, as the TTR remains at around 113 °C and the SOC TR decreases slightly.
It reveals that under the condition of battery overcharge, the current rate during charge process brings a larger influence on the degradation behavior, which is related to the …
