Nov 23 (Reuters) - China's Gotion High Tech (002074.SZ) and Slovak partner InoBat have signed a memorandum to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Slovakia, the Slovak Economy Ministry said on Thursday.
22. April 2024 InoBat, a Slovak company dedicated to developing and manufacturing innovative batteries for electric vehicles, has announced another significant milestone. The first batteries labelled “made in Slovakia” have been successfully produced.
With the production launch in Voderady, Slovakia joins Sweden, Norway, Germany, and France as the fifth European country capable of producing certified battery cells with European know-how. Voderady serves as a vital catalyst for transitioning from a mere assembly plant to a center of innovation.
Europe will see another battery plant come online in 2026. China-based battery maker Gotion High-tech and Slovak startup InoBat plans to build a battery factory in Slovakia. The facility will initially have an annual production capacity of 20GWh. Gotion and Inobat have formed a joint venture, Gotion Inobat Batteries (GIB), for the project.
Minister Denisa Sakova said the plant's construction was key for the future of the car industry, which is a major driver for Slovakia's economy. The plant, in Surany, 93 km (58 miles) east of the capital Bratislava, will create up to 1,500 jobs, the ministry said.
The news came after Gotion said in September that it aims to build a battery plant in Middle Europe with Inobat, of which it has acquired a 25% strategic stake. According to the MoU signed on Wednesday, GIB plans to begin constructing the factory in 2024. The Slovak government will offer subsidies to the project and arrange the land.
