Polymers play a crucial role in improving the performance of the ubiquitous lithium ion battery. But they will be even more important for the development of sustainable and versatile post-lithium battery technologies, in particular solid-state batteries.
A lithium polymer battery, or more correctly, lithium-ion polymer battery (abbreviated as LiPo, LIP, Li-poly, lithium-poly, and others), is a rechargeable battery of lithium-ion technology using a polymer electrolyte instead of a liquid electrolyte. Highly conductive semisolid (gel) polymers form this electrolyte.
Polymer electrolytes have attracted great interest for next-generation lithium (Li)-based batteries in terms of high energy density and safety.
Sustained efforts should be made to increase the ionic conductivity of polymer electrolytes, and reduce their reactivity with the Li metal anode. This will boost the development of polymer Li metal batteries.
Novel lithium metal polymer solid state batteries with nano C-LiFePO 4 and nano Li 1.2 V 3 O 8 counter-electrodes (average particle size 200 nm) were studied for the first time by in situ SEM and impedance during cycling. The kinetics of Li-motion during cycling is analyzed self-consistently together with the electrochemical properties.
