Although the benefits deriving from the solar pavements are not enough to cover the cost during 20 years of lifetime, and it would be economically attractive if the LCOE will be lower than 0.2 $/kWh. With review and case study, the study provides a thorough and needed platform for more advances of the concept of solar pavements. 1. Introduction
The core advantage of this technology is the non-extra land occupation. It is foreseeable that the development of PV pavement will bring huge benefits in the economic field and environmental field.
Similar to PV tiles, pavement PV modules also have additional advantages such as piezoelectric and thermoelectric energy harvesting when combined with traditional asphalt concrete roads [21, 22, 23]. As a part of the road structure, the improved PV module not only has the function of power generation but also provides support for vehicle traffic.
The present paper presents two types of solar pavements, namely thermal and electrical collector pavements, as an example of innovative structure leading to sustainable road infrastructure.
Studies have confirmed the feasibility of harvesting solar energy by applying innov ation technologies on asphalt pavement. Thermal and electrical consumption and they protect the same road pavement infrastructure. The paper reviews the latest progress on and also related pilots around the world. heat island mitigation (Efthymiou, 2016).
Compared with the conventional pavement (CP) module, all three solar energy harvesting pavement modules have lower maximum asphalt average temperatures that can decelerate the thermal aging of asphalt concrete.
