Can I charge a 3.7 battery with a 5v USB charger?

For a project, I want to charge a lipo battery (3.7V @2000mah) with a 5V USB charger. I'm not into electronics, so I don't know if is viable to do that. So, can I charger a 3.7 battery with a 5V charger with no problems? Thanks! Short answer: No, because your "5V USB Charger" is not a charger - it's a power supply. No, you can not.

Can a lithium-ion battery charger charge a 5V battery?

This post is about a tested sample circuit of a Lithium-Ion Battery charger that can be used to charge any 3.7V, 500mA Li-Ion battery using a 5V DC (USB, Solar Panel, DC Adapter) power supply. The circuit is designed using a microchip MCP73831/2 IC.

Can a MP3 player run on a 5V battery?

meh, your device will probably run just fine because most mp3 players can support usage while charging because 5v is running through the battery and the system takes power from the battery while charging so the voltage would be around 5v as well. im no genius in electricity but i think your little experiment worth a try.

How does a lithium ion battery charger work?

Lithium Ion, also sometimes called Li-ion or Lithium polymer or Lipo) have a slightly different charger than other battery types. Typically, the charger supplies a constant current at slightly higher than the battery's voltage. As the battery voltage increases, the supplied voltage increases until it hits the maximum for the cell - typically 4.2V.

How do I charge a lithium ion battery?

Simply plug in the input contact into any USB port or any 5V DC Supply and a 3.7V/4.2V lithium polymer or lithium-ion rechargeable battery into the output plug on the other end. Li-ion batteries need to be charged following a carefully controlled constant current/constant voltage (CV-CC) pattern that is unique to this cell chemistry.

Can a 5V power supply cause over-biasing?

Over-biasing internal circuitry on power-supply. Though unlikely, it is possible some analogue part starts to get close to over-biased at 5V. Most cheap MP3 players directly power everything with the 5V input, only switching operation mode based on its presence, so the chances are slim of this happening.
