Even in the presence of better performing semiconductor III-V technologies, silicon technologies are going to remain in the forefront for designing of different mmW circuits for 5G applications. However the existing silicon device models that are available in EDA tools for low frequency operations cannot be directly used for building mmW circuits.
Designing of semiconductor circuits for 5G implementation at mmW frequencies offers quite a few unique challenges especially because propagation characteristics of electromagnetic (EM) waves at mmW frequencies is quite different from that of lower RF frequency bands .
Silicon is one of the most prominent technologies for implementing mmW circuits for 5G and therefore comparison of silicon process technologies with semiconductor III-V technologies has been carried and effects of CMOS technology scaling on building mmW circuits have been thoroughly discussed.
Typical value of quality factor for CMOS MIM capacitor operating between mmW frequencies of 30 to 50 GHz is about 15, and it degrades as frequency increases . In addition, nominal capacitance value of MIM capacitors also varies with frequency.
Therefore a new paradigm has been explored for designing next generation cellular communication system (i.e. 5G) using 28 GHz and 39 GHz millimeter wave (mmW) frequency bands. In 2016 Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated licensed spectrum of 3.85 GHz in these mmW bands for 5G implementation.
Official term for 5G in ITU-R specifications is International Mobile Telecommunications 2020 or IMT2020. As presented by Michael J. Marcus in a detailed timeline, the process was started in 2014 and the specifications are to be finalized by the year 2020.
